Adoption Process Overview...
Before reading on, we ask that you are absolutely, undeniably 100% certain you are ready to take on all the responsibilities a dog represents. We ask that you research the breed/breeds you are interested in adopting & that you have made sure that you are ready to take on the commitments that the breed/breeds are - behaviorially & medically. We also ask that you understand the financial, emotional & physical constraints adopting a dog will require from you & anyone living in your home. All too often, we are made aware of adopters that have not fully thought about all the things they should consider prior to taking a dog into their lives. It is important for you & for the dog to have done your homework. We can not do this for our adopters, they must soul search for themselves. If you have already done that, then please read on.
At Green Fur Kidz, our top priority is making sure the homes selected for our foster dogs are the homes that best match each particular dogs personality, physical needs & mental well-being. Each dog is different & therefore, each dog will need a certain type of home that will complement the dogs needs. Each dog's biography (listed on the tabs by each foster dog's name to the right) illustrates their personality in their foster home & what kind of forever home they need. The foster family evaluates each dog on a daily basis while living within their home. Sometimes a dog will be different in a forever home depending upon the forever home's individual environment & how it differs from the foster family's enviornment. We ask that you take that into consideration as well.
1 ~ Apply
Completely fill out the Green Fur Kidz Application online. Once your application is received, you will receive a confirmation. If you do not receive a confirmation within 24 hours of time, please email us to make sure it was recieved by us. Immediately upon receipt, your application will be reviewed. If your application does not match the needs of the foster dog you applied for, we will contact you & let you know. If this is the case, we encourage you to apply again & we do keep applications on file for future use for a period of one year. If you reapply, please contact us first & we will let you know what additional information we need from you so that you do not have to fill out the Adoption Application all over again.
2 ~ Verify
If your application seems to match up with the needs of the foster dog, one of our volunteers will contact your veterinarian & your personal references. If we are not satisfied with the references, you will be notified & we may attempt to remedy any indescrepancies or we may decide that the dog you have applied for is not a good match for you at this time. If your references have been checked & they are in good standing, the foster family will contact you directly for a phone interview. After the phone interview, if the foster family feels you are a potential candidate to adopt their foster dog, we will continue the adoption process by moving on to Stage 3.
3 ~ Homevisit
Once the foster family has let us know that you are a potential candidate & a good match for adopting their foster dog, one of our volunteers will contact you to set up a homevisit. At Green Fur Kidz, we strive to make sure that all placements are once & for the life of the dog... so meeting you & your family in your home is extremely important. We require you, all members living in the home along with all current pets living in the home to be in the home at the time of your scheduled homevisit. If they are not, we may have to reschedule when this can be arranged. Some times we are able to bring along the dog you have applied for, depending upon the dog's foster family's location & the logistics of scheduling a meet up. It is not always possible, but we strive to do this since we think it's important, especially if there are other dogs in the potential adopting home. Some of the things we will be looking for while we are visiting your home are checking your yard for fencing & potential hazards, checking your home to make sure it is safe for the dog you have applied for, showing us where you will keep the dog you applied for during the day & where the dog will sleep at night. There are general questions they may also ask you & during this time, your family may also ask questions about our rescue & any other questions your family may have about the dog you have applied to adopt.
4 ~ Final Review
During this final review, the foster family will look over your homevisit questionnaire that was taken by one of our volunteers & any other materials that are presented for evaluation. They may or may not contact you for verification on some items about the homevisit, depending upon the individual needs of their foster dog. Some times, if the foster family is making the homevisit themselves, this stage goes a lot faster since they probably have already made up their mind after visiting. If the foster family was not the one conducting the homevisit & if there are discrepancies, we may try to remedy them in order for you to be approved to adopt. If there are no issues with your homevisit, the foster family will notify the Forever Families Director & Review Team (who also has been reviewing your homevisit questionnaire) & if there are no further questions, you will be approved for adoption. The foster family will notify you that your adoption of their foster dog has been approved. If you are still deciding upon whether or not you would like to adopt the foster dog after your homevisit/meet up with the foster dog & foster family, please only take 48 hours to make this decision. We have other applicants who would desire the chance to adopt the foster dog as well & it is only fair to them that they not have to wait to hear whether or not the dog they were interested in has been adopted.
5 ~ Transfer
The foster family will set up a time for the transfer of their foster dog to you. Please pick up your newly adopted dog within 48 hours of notification of approved adoption. Prior to the day you adopt your dog, please pay your dog's adoption fee online & print out your receipt for the foster family to verify that their foster dog's adoption fee has been sent - or you can make give cash on day of adoption. Unfortunately, we have had adopters bounce checks on us so now we no longer accept checks. The day you officially adopt your dog, you will be asked to sign an adoption contract, along with any other materials that are needed for that specific foster dog. You will be given all the veterinarian records that the dog has along with any history that is available. In addition, you will be given microchip information along with any items that the foster family will be sending home with your newly adopted dog. We ask you register your dog's microchip as soon as possible & keep Green Fur Kidz, Inc.'s name & contact information as a backup on the microchip account in case of emergencies. During this final stage of the adoption process, we ask that you be patient & understanding with our foster families. Letting go of a foster dog that is truly a member of the family is one of the hardest things a foster family must do. All our foster families have invested much love, time, money & energy into their foster dog & we have been told that this final part of the process is the most difficult on the foster families, yet the most rewarding at the same time.
After Adoption ~ Stay in Touch
We know it is not always easy... but after your dog's adoption, we ask that you please stay in touch. Please contact your dog's foster family at least once a week via email for the first month & let them know how things are going & then once a month for the following six months. We ask this because if there are issues, we would like to try to help. Our goal is not to have the dog find itself back in rescue six months after the fact when we could have helped remedy any problems that might arise. Sometimes, letting an issue fester can actually be detrimental to a dog's health or mental well-being so its better, if there are any issues, that they be addressed quickly & with the proper route. We always like to hear stories, too! We post updates on our blog from time to time (when there is time which there seems to be a lack of these days, but we try). So please send us updates & pictures via email about your adopted dog because it is the reason we do... well, what we do!
Some Final Words...
At Green Fur Kidz, all of our dogs have been on euthanasia lists in kill shelters. They have been through a tremendous amount in their short lives before they came into our rescue. Each & every dog needs different things in a forever home. Our goal is to make sure our foster dogs are placed once & only once. That is why the application process starts with you making the decision to apply & the decision to take on the responsibility of adding one of our foster dogs to your family. If you have soul searched & you know that deep in your heart you are ready to fully commit to the dog you would like to adopt for their entire lifetime, we ask you to apply now we are looking for forever families ready to go the distance.
Please remember that our Green Fur Kidz are precious & we take their adoption seriously. We require an application, veterinarian information, personal references & a home visit prior to approving any Green Fur Kidz' adoption into a loving forever home.
